Few things turn buyers off to a home more than pet odors. If you are listing a home and you have pets, very likely you have pet odors – even if you don’t realize it.

The trouble is that we become accustomed to pet odor very easily – even if the odor is very slight. But some buyers are sensitive to it. So when they walk in, they may not even consider your home because of the pet odor.

So what can be done? Here are three simple things you can do:

  1. Repaint and Clean. Seems simple, and most sellers do this anyways. But when we say paint and clean – we mean VERY thoroughly. Paint ceilings, walls, trim, doors, and anything else that is paintable.
  2. Remove Carpeting. Also, you could add to this to have your furniture and drapes professionally cleaned. Carpeting is the big one though. It is extremely difficult to get the smell out of carpeting, so replacing it is usually the safe bet.
  3. Have Your Ductwork Cleaned. This is important because if your ductwork is dirty with pet dander, there is no point in doing point 1 and 2. So have your ductwork professionally cleaned.
