There is a very specific way each house needs to be supported so that it doesn’t collapse in on itself. In some cases where a homeowner is renovating or building a home, adjustable steel columns are used for support. These can be used temporarily, or they might even be a permanent means of support.
Adjustable steel columns are made with a hollow core and can thus be extended to fit perfectly. It is very important that they are installed correctly. They shouldn’t lean more than one inch over the whole length of the beam, and they must be mechanically fastened both at the top and at the bottom. Due to the complexity of using adjustable steel columns, a structural engineer needs to be involved.
If you notice that an adjustable steel column is starting to rust, it will need to be replaced, since it could lose integrity. Rust can start when the paint coating on the column is scratched.
